FLOWERING PLANTS IN WAYANAD (NADAVAYAL)

ABSTACT

A STUDY ON FLOWERING PLANTS IN WAYANAD (NADAVAYAL)

Wayanad is a part of wide Nilgiri Biosphere. More over it is a tribal back ward district and immigrated land. Even though hectors of forest land has been changed into fertile agricultural field, the Wayanad wild life Sanctuary is remaining unchanged with its beautiful flora. We can find a large number of flowering plants of different species in the area like forest, paddy, agricultural field and river sides of Wayanad. Unfortunately the common people as well as the new generation do not give much importance to this rare species and their role in the balancing the equilibrium of the echo system. They are ignorant of the urgent need of the preservation of this species.

These thoughts motivated us to select this subject as a research project titled as a study on flowering plants in Wayanad (Nadavayal village) for National children’s science congress. We studied and observed the different kinds of flowering plants of Nadavayal village, through Survey, Field trips and Interviews

Lithosphere is the sub title of the subject. Planet earths our home Explore care and share of the National children’s science congress. This research project belongs to the sub title Lithosphere.

The principal Aims of the Project

ò To find the diversity of flowering plants in Wayanad

ò To find out the density and diversity of flowering plants of each eco-system like Forest, Agricultural field, Paddy field and river banks

ò To understand the utility of the collected flowering plants and flowers

ò To prepare modern as well as ordinary products using collected flowers

ò To keep the Herbarium and Photo graphs of different kinds of flowers

ò To make awareness of the urgent need of protecting the rare species of flowering plants

The Activities conducted

ò Research survey in different kinds of Echo system

ò Interviews

ò Observations

ò Herbarium Keeping

ò Photo album

ò Preparation of useful food items

Were the methods we adopted to achieve the goal. The subject for the research project has been discussed with the prominent scientists M.S. Swaminathan foundation in Kalpetta .Especially we are obliged to Mr. Ratheesh Narayanan who helped us to conduct this project successfully.

Our observations and studies on the diversity and density of the flowering plants were mainly based on the echo system like forest, paddy, and agricultural field and river sides of the Nadavayal village. We selected about 200 plots of 10mtsq. It means 50 plots; we observed the nearby area and collected other 33 flowering plants too. More over we collected the details, regarding the utility of this flowering plants from the contemporary journals and by Interview with experts.

They were identified and classified with the scientific name with the help of the research fellows of M.S.S.R.F of Kalpetta.

We could find out 171 flowering plants in our detail study and survey. They can be classified as follow.

ò Tree

ò Climbers

ò Bushes

ò Creepers

Findings

Flowering plants - 171 (138through survey and 33

through observation)

Details regarding Major Distribution of the flowering plants depending on the variation of each eco-system

Forest – Major occupation - Kurunthotty - 18.6

River – Mexican Sunflower - 4.6

Agricultural Field - Sneha Koora - 13.7

Paddy Field – Karuka pullu - 12.64

The names of the plants occupied in least numbers comparing each eco-system.

ò Kooramullu

ò Menthonny

ò Kolambi

ò Anachuvady

ò Murikku

ò Kozhippoovu

ò Vellila

ò Puthari Chunda

Among the identified flowering plants

ò Medicinal plants - 57.97%

ò Edible Items - 24.63%

ò Industrial Products - 6.52%

ò Poisonous Items - 2.17%

ò Others - 8.31%

Again we classified them into

1. Bushes - 52.89%

2. Trees - 11.59%

3. Grass - 10.14%

4. Creepers - 9.42%

5. Climbers - 15.96%

The Availability and density of medicinal plants and edible plants which had been used since ancient times have been decreased now a days.

We prepared the Herberiyum and Photo Album of

Flowering Plants.

We discussed our observations in the science club and with the experts of Swaminathan Foundation and our plants are enforced in the school as a part of Continues learning Activities. To protect flowering plants we seek the support of the public and create awareness both in the public and in the new generation.

Create awareness and the need for preserving plants we arrange the following programs.

1. Speech in the School assembly regarding flowering plants.

2. Display of posters

3. IT presentations

4. Take oath in the assembly

We are preparing a documentary “WILD FLOWERS” and a blog. We are planning to prepare “A BOOK OF FLOWERING PLANTS” – we expect that through these activities we can convey a message to the world that “We protect flowering plants”.
